What are the family reunion trends for 2027? Travel research published in 2026 points to shorter, fuller reunions from one central base, outdoor settings, fall dates, and grandparents leading multigenerational trips. Families also want one known price, easy arrivals for relatives flying in from different cities, milestone celebrations, and early booking for the scarcest lodging.

Travel trend reports are written for hotels and airlines, not for the cousin organizing 60 relatives. We read recent research from Hilton (its 2026 and 2027 trend reports), the Family Travel Association (via AARP), American Express (via Travel Noire) and Virtuoso advisors (via Veranda), kept the findings that change how a reunion gets planned, and matched each to our state guides. Sources are linked at the end.

01 / SHORTER, FULLER

Why Are Shorter, Fuller Reunions a 2027 Trend?

Hilton’s 2027 Trends Report found that 88% of U.S. travelers consider a trip of fewer than three to four days a short trip, and 67% like to plan travel that lets them experience a lot in a short time. For a reunion, that points to a long weekend built around one central base.

The survey, run by Morning Consult for Hilton, covered 14,744 travelers in 14 countries from May 18 to June 1, 2026. It also found that 63% prefer to stay somewhere central with plenty to do nearby.

What it means for your reunion:

  • Plan Friday evening to Sunday brunch, with Saturday as the main day.
  • Pick one hub (a hotel block, a resort or a cabin compound) with restaurants, a park and a grocery store a short drive away.
  • Hold two required events a day at most. See sample family reunion events schedules.

Destinations that fit: hubs with plenty nearby, such as Tennessee (Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge), Missouri (Branson) and Florida (Orlando).

02 / OUTDOORS FIRST

Why Should a 2027 Reunion Be Planned Around the Outdoors?

In the same Hilton survey, 79% of travelers said fresh air and the outdoors are essential to how they relax while traveling. For a reunion, that favors cabins, lakes, and state and national parks, where a porch or a shoreline gives every generation a place to gather without buying tickets.

What it means for your reunion: rent a cabin compound or lake houses with one large shared deck or lawn. Plan one flat walk for everyone and one longer hike. Keep an indoor backup for rain.

Destinations that fit: Tennessee (Smoky Mountain cabins), Colorado (mountain lodges), Wisconsin and Michigan (lake houses), Utah and Montana (national parks), and North Carolina (Blue Ridge Mountains).

03 / FALL AND SHOULDER SEASON

Is Fall Becoming the New Season for Family Reunions?

Virtuoso travel advisors interviewed by Veranda describe fall as “the new summer” for 2027, and AARP points to fall shoulder-season deals at historic grand hotels for multigenerational families. A September or October reunion can bring better rates at some hotels and cooler weather for outdoor plans.

Veranda’s piece covers luxury travel, so treat it as a direction, not a price promise. Compare quotes for a summer and a fall weekend.

What it means for your reunion: if your family has school-age children, keep a fall reunion to Friday through Sunday, or use a fall holiday weekend. Check foliage-weekend lodging before you announce the date.

Destinations that fit: Tennessee, Virginia (Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway), Massachusetts (the Berkshires), Michigan, North Carolina and Georgia.

04 / GRANDPARENTS LEAD

What Changes When Grandparents Lead the Reunion?

The Family Travel Association’s U.S. Family Travel Survey 2025, as reported by AARP, found that 71% of grandparents have taken a multigenerational trip in the last three years, and 44% are likely to take one in the next three. Plan around the oldest and youngest guests first.

Hilton’s 2026 trends research adds that 48% of Hilton team members surveyed see more families traveling with three or more generations.

What it means for your reunion:

  • Ask about access first: elevator or ground-floor rooms, step-free paths, seating.
  • Choose a lodge or resort where rooms, meals and activities share one property, so elders don’t need a car.
  • Use Split & Reunite. Split by energy level during the day, then reunite everyone for meals. Our family reunion activities list sorts ideas by age.

Destinations that fit: Colorado mountain lodges and Florida resorts, where you can look for rooms, meals and activities on one property.

05 / ONE PRICE, FEWER DECISIONS

Why Are One-Price Reunions a 2027 Trend?

Hilton’s 2027 report found that 24% of travelers try to accommodate a group and keep others happy, and Virtuoso advisors quoted by Veranda say all-inclusive, one-price stays are being rebranded upmarket. When every household knows its total before it says yes, money is less likely to become the argument.

One-price formats include all-inclusive resorts, cruises, and cabin compounds where shared costs become dues set by age group. Our family reunion dues guide shows the formula with worked budgets.

On AmazingReunion you set a price for each age group (infants, kids, teens, adults, seniors or a custom group), and each household sees an estimate of its total as it RSVPs.

Destinations that fit: Florida (resorts and cruise ports), Missouri (Branson), South Carolina (Myrtle Beach) and Hawaii.

“If every household knows its total before it RSVPs, the weekend is about family, not the bill.”

06 / MEET-UP TRAVEL

How Do You Plan for Relatives Arriving From Many Cities?

Hilton’s 2027 report found that 31% of travelers have traveled solo to meet friends or family at their destination. A reunion works the same way, with households flying in from different cities. Pick a place near a well-served airport, set an arrival window, and make the first night easy.

  • Check flights from the cities where your relatives live
  • Set an arrival window, such as Friday from 2 to 7 p.m.
  • Make night one a casual welcome with food that keeps for late arrivals.
  • Coordinate rides in chat. AmazingReunion has a chat room for the whole reunion and one for each family branch.

Destinations that fit: states with large airports, such as Georgia (Atlanta), Illinois (Chicago), Texas (Dallas and Houston), Colorado (Denver) and Florida (Orlando).

07 / MILESTONES

Should You Tie the Reunion to a Milestone?

Yes, if one is coming up. The American Express 2026 Global Travel Trends Report, as reported by Travel Noire, found that two-thirds of global respondents planned to travel in 2026 to celebrate a milestone for someone else. A grandmother’s 90th birthday or a 50th anniversary gives relatives a clear reason to come.

Hilton’s 2027 report adds that 76% of travelers agree having a trip on the calendar gives them a purpose to work toward. Announce the date early.

What it means for your reunion: make the honoree’s celebration the Saturday dinner and choose a place the honoree can reach comfortably. Thanksgiving is a good time to share the news; here is how to bring up a family reunion at Thanksgiving.

08 / BOOK THE SCARCEST LODGING FIRST

Which Reunion Lodging Should You Book First?

Book what there is least of: large houses, suites, connecting rooms and accessible rooms. One Virtuoso advisor quoted by Veranda says the best suites, connecting rooms and villas for the holidays can disappear a year or more in advance. For a holiday-weekend reunion, book as soon as the date is set.

Book lodging first, then the main meal venue, then group activities. Get the group-block cutoff date in writing. Our month-by-month family reunion planning timeline shows what to book when.

09 / AT A GLANCE

Which 2027 Trends Fit Your Family Reunion?

You can combine several trends in one plan. A fall long weekend at a Smoky Mountain cabin compound, priced by age group and booked early, uses five of them. Find the trends that match your family below, then open the state guides that appear more than once.

10 / CHECKLIST

How Do You Use These Trends to Pick Your Destination?

Start with your family, not the trend list. Note who is coming, where they travel from and what the oldest guests can manage. Then match those facts to the trends above, shortlist two or three states, and compare real quotes before you announce anything.

  1. List households by home city and note anyone with mobility needs.
  2. Choose the length and season: summer, fall or a holiday weekend.
  3. Decide between one price per person and pay-as-you-go.
  4. Shortlist two or three states from the table and read their reunion planning guides.
  5. Get lodging quotes, then follow our step-by-step guide to plan a reunion.

Choose a place within an easy drive of a well-served airport, check flights from the cities where your relatives live, set an arrival window, and plan a relaxed first-night welcome at the lodging so late arrivals miss nothing important.
