Alaska State Museum (Juneau), Alaska

Alaska Raptor Center (Sitka), Alaska

Two concerned Sitkans opened up the "Alaska Raptor Center" in 1980 right in their backyard. They started off with only one injured bald eagle. Now it is an IRS-recognized non-profit corporation. They do not receive any federal, state or local tax money. Through visitor programs, donations, memberships, gift shop and catalog sales, grants and private contributions; they have been able to adequately fund the center. Now approximately 2,500 members worldwide help the Center accomplish its mission of rehabilitation, education, and research. Each year, the center provides medical treatment to many injured bald eagles and other birds with a sole goal to release them back into the wild if possible. Not all make it back; those that don't join their Raptors-in-Residence. This in turrn provides an excitement and education for more than 36,000 visitors and for the 15,000 school children around the country year round.
